Story Element Breakdown

Characters & Emotional Resonance - unlike modern movie adaptations, the "Monster" here is articulate, deeply sensitive, and profoundly lonely. Shelley does an incredible job making you sympathize with a murderer. The psychological breakdown of Victor as his ambition destroys his family is devastating to read. Atmosphere & World-BuildingThe book is atmospheric perfection. Shelley uses the "Gothic" style beautifully—expect dark, rainy nights, desolate Swiss mountains, and bleak Arctic ice sheets. The setting perfectly mirrors the isolation and coldness felt by the characters. Pacing and StructureThe story uses a "frame narrative" (a story within a story within a story). While the beginning starts a bit slow with letters from a sea captain, once the Creature begins telling his own side of the story in the middle chapters, the pacing becomes incredibly fast and gripping.
